History

Mehrangarh Fort, located 410 feet above the city of Jodhpur on a hill named Bhakur-chidiya (the mountain of birds), is one of the city’s most cherished attractions due to its magnificent architecture and varied history.

Rao Jodha, the ruler of Mandore and the founder of Jodhpur, constructed the Mehrangarh Fort in 1459. While constructing the city, he realised that the location is safe and isolated, making it an ideal location for his capital. That is when he decided to construct a massive fort spanning 5 kilometers and rising to a height of 125 metres to protect his loved ones and the people of his kingdom from invaders.

According to legend, Rao Jodha was cursed after forcibly removing a hermit (a person who lives alone and apart from the rest of society, especially for religious reasons) named Chidiya Nathji from the hill to build the fort. The hermit cursed the fort to always suffer from droughts. Rao Jodha built a temple and a house for the hermit within the fort in an attempt to break the curse and appease him. Other stories revolve around the king’s efforts to mitigate the effects of the curse. Some say he buried alive a commoner named Raja Ram Meghwal in the fort’s foundation to negate the curse’s effect.

Since the man willingly agreed to give his life, the king promised to look after his family and kept his word.

Rao Jodha’s successors made significant contributions to the fort’s structure over time. They reinforced the fort’s walls and gates, as well as built new temples and different palaces within its walls. The fort was built into what it is today, during the rule of Jaswant Singh of Marwar in the 17th century.

An Overview Of Inside The Fort

The architecture of the fort at first glance. The fort appears strong and robust from the outside, with well-founded walls. The interiors feature fine and graceful glasswork and there are 5 Mahals or Palaces inside the Mehrangarh Fort that will captivate you and take you to the golden age.

1. Sheesh Mahal (Hall Of Mirrors)

The Sheesh Mahal is a magnificent work of fine glass and beautiful mirror craftsmanship. This location is not directly accessible to visitors, but it is visible through a small enclosure. The walls of the Sheesh Mahal are intricately carved with images of flowers and Indian mythology. People appreciate this charming location because of its beauty.

2. Phool Mahal (Palace Of Flowers)

During the golden period, Phool mahal was used as a royal men’s private party room. The walls are covered in paintings of the royal family. The Mahal or palace is brightly coloured and exhibits positivity and vibrancy. The dignity and glory are visible in every detail of the room, including the ceiling, glasswork windows, and floor carpeting.

3. Jhanki Mahal (The Peeping Palace)

From the windows of this palace, the princesses and queens used to observe the royal court’s meetings, ceremonies and other activities going on in the courtyard. The blue ceilings are gorgeously designed. Another interesting feature here are the beautiful and artistic cradles used for the royal children.

4.Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace)

Moti Mahal is the Mehrangarh Museum’s largest period room. Raja Sur Singh constructed it. Moti Mahal was where the king sat on his throne and met with all of his subjects. The palace houses the Sringar Chowki, or Jodhpur’s Royal Throne. The Moti Mahal features five alcoves that lead to hidden balconies. The balconies are thought to have been built for the Maharaja’s queens to listen in on court proceedings.

5. Takhat Vilas (Maharaja Takhat Singh’s Chamber)

Takht Vila was built by Maharaja Takhat Singh. During his reign, it served as his residence. The Maharaja was Jodhpur’s last ruler to live in the Mehrangarh Fort. Takhat Vilas is an amazing blend of traditional and modern styles (relating to the time of the British). Beautiful paintings on the walls and ceiling wooden beams depicting scenes ranging from the religious Krishna Leela to the Rathore sport of pig sticking remain in good condition.

6.Mehrangarh Fort Museum

Mehrangarh Fort Museum has preserved all historical items from the Rathore dynasty to the Mughal period. The Mehrangarh Fort Museum displays wagons (dolly) , royal costumes, musical instruments, royal parlance, and furniture associated with the royal families.

T-shirts, postcards, jewellery, textiles, perfumes, caps, bags, books, and many other items are available at the Mehrangarh Fort Museum in Jodhpur. These items depict the Mehrangarh Fort’s history as well as Jodhpur’s culture. These products can be purchased directly from the museum or from the museum’s official website.

7.Chamunda Mata Ji Temple

Chamunda Mataji Temple is a significant attraction at Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur. The magnificent temple is located within the temple complex. In May 1460, Rao Jodha brought Maa Chamunda’s statue from Mandore and established it in this temple.

The temple is well-known, and many locals and international tourists visit it, especially during Navratri and Dussehra celebrations.

8. Chokelao Mehran Terrace

This fantastic royal and open air terrace restaurant is located inside the fort and offers authentic and delectable Rajasthani dishes along with candlelight dinners in the amazing light at night. The location offers a breathtaking and majestic view of the Mehrangarh fort on one side and panoramic view of the Jodhpur city on the other side.
