Rudra Pratap Singh, a Bundela Rajput, created Orrcha in 1501 and promptly completed the fort. Soon after, the fort was renovated, with temples and palaces being built within the complex. The Raja Mahal or Raja Manadir, completed by Madhukar Shah between his kingdoms from 1554 to 1591, remains one of the most popular places to this day. Vir Singh Deo constructed the Sawan Bhadon Mahal and Jahangir Mahal between 1605 and 1627.

All of these monuments combine to form what is now known as Orchha Fort. It is widely assumed that British architects were influenced by this fort when designing the Lutyens Zone in Delhi, which is a massive iconic landmark.
